Shedding after 2 months of Microneedling - Is it normal?
Hello everybody,
I have recently incorporated Microneedling into my routine against hair loss and am now experiencing a pretty nasty shedding phase after about 2 months of introducing this procedure.
I have the derminator 2 and use it once every week with a 0.75mm depth on my entire scalp. I experience redness on my scalp for about 1-2 days but no bleeding. However, I have noticed that since a few weeks the hair on my problem areas is thinning out and my scalp becomes way more visible which got me worried.
I did some research to find out if this reaction is normal and what I gathered is that shedding after the first couple of months after starting microneedling can be expected and shows that the treatment is working. However, I also have read some posts here where people claim that microneedling even made their hair loss worse.
Now I am a bit on the fence on how I should move forward since I have seen so many insane hair regrowth stories thanks to microneedling but I am currently experiencing the opposite effect. I want to continue the treatment for atleast 4 more months to gauge how well it works for me but the shedding is pretty discouraging.
To give a bit of context to my situation:
I am currently 24 years old and noticed I was losing my hair around march 2021, a couple months before turning 21 . At first I thought nothing of it, but it became worse relatively quickly so I looked more deeply into it. I started using minoxidil around the end of that same year and also tried finasteride multiple times but got pretty bad side effects from it (even with microdosing and using it topically versus orally) so I gave up on Fin. Instead I have been using two other topical DHT-blockers ever since + a ketoconazole shampoo 2x times per week.
A couple months later, around early 2022, I also bought the derminator 2 but I was prettly lazy with it and probably used it at most 3 times consecutively at that time. Even with all the medication mentioned above my hair loss still got way worse to the point were I pretty much almost had complete bald areas around my crown, temples and beneath the front.
This lead me to take the decision to undergo a hair transplant surgery which I did in late 2022. The results I got from it after around 9 months were pretty satisfying: My hairline got fixed and my previous bald spots now looked fairly normal again. I never got a full head of hair again but my hair now looked like how it should for someone my age.
The problem is that while the transplanted hair will last forever, my original hair follicles are still prone to hair loss and since my routine was not able to stop my balding, it is just a matter of time when things get worse again, especially when the condition is so aggressive like it is in my case. I think I even noticed some thinning again in the last months (to clarify, I am still continuing with my already mentioned routine).
I do not want to wait and become so desperate like I used to be so that is why I started microneedling again. Now I am actually taking it serious though (7 sessions in the last 8 weeks). I see so much support for microneedling, both scientifically and from other peoples experiences, so it feels rough for me to be in a situation where now my problem areas are thinning out so much again, reminding me of how they looked before my hair transplant.
How are your experiences with microneedling? Were you in a similar situation with shedding and did you stick through it? I would love to hear your opinion on this.
Thank you.
