Books about enjoying solitude

I'm looking for novels that are metaphorical with a likeable narrator and a sad ending (optional). The main theme should highlight overcoming loneliness and coming to realise the beauty of being alone; unrequited love works too.

I normally prefer books that focus on the main plot and are also inclined towards artistic setups but this is very optional. (e.g art student, museums, painter etc.)
