SW Florida beginner

Hi folks, tagging along on my wife's work trip to Marco Island in two weeks. I'm gonna be spending most of my time parenting, but I should be able to sneak out a few times to fish. Can anyone give me an idea of how best to use my time? I'm not gonna have a big enough block of time for a guided trip, so I'm limited to DIY. From the bit of research I've done it seems a good plan is to bring a spinning rod and soak live shrimp on a circle hook, but I've also got a decent fly rod with some salt flies (bait/crab imitations).

Should I be thinking about renting a kayak, or can I find ample opportunity from shore? Marco proper, or do I need to go south into 10,000 islands? This is a very open ended request, so I'd appreciate any tips. Mostly just looking forward to doing some fishing in Feb. that isn't through a hole in the ice. Thanks.
