Am i overreacting?
I attend Exeter University as a minority student, and all of my flatmates are white. Last night, I overheard two of them, who were very drunk, loudly using the n-word repeatedly. Naturally, this made me feel uncomfortable and upset. While I understand that we live in a world where the n-word is often trivialised, appearing frequently in social media comment sections from non-Black people, it doesn’t diminish the harm or offense it causes. I want to cut them off over it. I feel that I shouldn’t have to explain to grown men why using such a word is problematic and offensive to me. My other friends think it’s not a problem because they ‘didn’t mean it in a racist way’ What are your thoughts on this situation? If you think im being overly sensitive just say it I’m a grown man i don’t need sympathy. EDIT: to make it clear they was no singing along to a song they were jus screaming the n word for the sake of it. The fact they said the word so comfortably make me think they have said it before.
