Why did Amon hate bending so much? [Book 1 Spoilers]

This has probably been discussed before, but I don't understand why Amon was so keen to rid the world of bending when he actually was a great bender.

Did he want to take everyone else's bending away just so he could be the only bender left and therefore have great power? As soon as he began bending himself, his life turned tragic. Does Amon associate bending with this sadness? Does he think all benders are like his evil father?
