Why do we still have long hours?

Hi! I just got into a program which requires me a 24 hour duty and a 10 hour from duty. Which means I’ll be in the hospital 34 hours straight, we also lack staff so I don’t get to sleep.

Why do we still have long hours if there are thousands of studies since the early 2000s proving these ineffective? As much as I want to be a specialist, my body can’t seem to handle these hours.

Btw, any tips to survive these hours? I’ve lost 10 lbs in 1 month.
