Delta Vero Widespread Bathroom faucet: How in the world do you remove the "stream straightener" or aerator? Weak water flow, got a bunch of scale buildup.

I have a couple bathroom faucets that are the Delta Vero Widespread design:

Both my faucets are pretty old, 10+ years I think, and it looks like they are covered in scale and buildup so don't flow very well.

Looking at the Maintenance and Installation sheet, there is supposed to be a "Stream Straightener" that you can take out with some needle nose pliers. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to remove it, I have stuck the pliers up there and there is just nothing at all to grab onto. I've tried pulling on the sides of the nozzle with the pliers and nothing at all moves. Is there some specific place I need to grab onto with the pliers? I am thinking there is just way too much crap and scale built up over the years to remove it now? Is there some chemicals I can soak the faucet in to dissolve some of the scale that has built up?

Here are two pics of the faucet in question... no idea how to get this stupid thing out with pliers!
