Is it even possible to hit a homerun on a curveball without a nunchuck?

My friend keeps picking Waluigi or Boo as their pitcher and every single time he throws a curveball on the edge of the strike box. I have yet to hit a home run when that happens and rarely even get on base without a star. I feel like the only way it would be possible is if I could move the character towards the ball but that’s only possible with a nunchuck which I don’t use.
