My Journey so far!!!
Finding Peace Through Building Gunpla: A Journey of Healing
Life can be unbearably challenging at times. For me, it started with the devastating loss of a close relative, followed closely by the heartbreak of a difficult breakup. These events pushed me into a deep depression, leaving me feeling empty, restless, and unable to function.
I found myself in a vicious cycle: I couldn’t sleep more than 3–4 hours a night, and when I did, the restlessness and emotional weight followed me into the next day. Brain fog became my constant companion, making it hard to focus, and my energy was completely drained. I knew I needed something—anything—to help me find relief and regain control of my life.
In mid-2024, I stumbled across something unexpected: Gunpla, the art of building Gundam model kits. At first, it was just a curious distraction, something to fill the empty hours. But as soon as I began my first kit, I realized this wasn’t just a pastime—it was something much more profound.
What Gunpla Gave Me
From the moment I opened my first kit, I found myself immersed in an entirely different world. Building Gunpla required focus, attention to detail, and patience. Each tiny piece needed to be carefully handled, and following the instructions step-by-step forced me to be fully present in the moment.
Here’s what I learned through the process:
Patience: Building Gunpla is a slow, methodical process. It’s not something you can rush, and that alone was a lesson for me. I learned to embrace the journey instead of constantly looking for a quick solution.
Focus: For hours at a time, my mind stopped racing. The chaos of grief and heartbreak faded away as I concentrated on assembling each piece. It felt like therapy—my own version of meditation.
Goal-Oriented Thinking: While I didn’t customize anything, following the step-by-step instructions of a kit gave me a clear goal to work toward. It was satisfying to see progress with each piece I put into place, and the end result gave me a sense of accomplishment that I hadn’t felt in a long time.
A Sense of Control: When so much in life felt beyond my control, Gunpla gave me a space where I could create something with my own hands. It reminded me that I still had the ability to make something beautiful, even when I felt broken inside.
A New Kind of Healing
What surprised me the most was how much this hobby began to improve my overall well-being. After spending hours focused on building, I noticed I was finally able to sleep. The calm and peace I experienced during the process carried over into the night, and I began waking up feeling more rested. The brain fog started to lift, and for the first time in months, I felt a sense of clarity returning to my life.
And here’s the truth: I’d rather spend money on Gunpla kits than on depression pills. Medications may work for some, but for me, finding this creative outlet was the healing I needed. It gave me a sense of purpose, a reason to look forward to the next day, and a tangible way to manage my mental health.
Why I’m Sharing This
Gunpla became more than a hobby—it became a lifeline. It taught me to be patient with myself, to focus on the present moment, and to find joy in small, deliberate steps. It reminded me that healing isn’t about rushing to feel better; it’s about finding something, no matter how small, that brings you peace and fulfillment.
If you’re struggling with your mental health, I want you to know that healing is possible. It may not come from where you expect, but it’s out there. Whether it’s a creative hobby, a new skill, or simply something that lets you escape for a little while, don’t be afraid to try.
For me, healing came in the form of tiny plastic pieces and a desk full of tools. To anyone going through a difficult time, I hope you find your version of Gunpla—something that helps you find peace and joy when you need it most.
