is there a problem with heavily referencing someone elses artstyle?

What sprouted this question was because ive seen multiple popular artists on tiktok say to not heavily ref their artstyle because it makes the uncomfy. I can kind of understand that (not really) but if anyone could tell me why it would be helpful😭.

Anyways, i saw a smaller artist post a video of their art with a style that was similar to that of a much more popular artist on the platform. That popular artists has said that heavily referencing their art makes them uncomfy, but that smaller artist didnt know and they were getting attacked by multiple people in their comment's who claimed that they were copying and they should take it down bc it makes that artist uncomfortable etc etc?

i personally don't think it would be that much of a problem since everyones artstyle has influences from other artists as they develop, so i dont see how anyone can truly own an artstyle

i thought the art community was done with these discussions, i thought we all kinda landed on the point that artstyle theft cant really exist but idk guys😭😭😭
